Young children around the age of 6 can come to our STAR GROUPS. Assessments take place at the start of a swimming quarter and about half way through each quarter. These groups take children who can already swim and wish to learn the correct way more thoroughly and possibly progress to full competitive training and competition. The swimming teachers, all of whom are qualified and experienced over many years, follow basically the National Plan for the Teaching of Swimming, (NPTS). This is an approved scheme from the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) the governing body of the sport of swimming. Each quarter of the year, assessments and time trials will take place and the swimmers will progress through the star groups 2 to 5 according to ability and aptitude. All Star Group swimmers are encouraged to enter our twice-yearly Star Group Galas and annual Styles Championships, which is another way we can assess ability. They may also enter the annual Club Championships, Star Group swimmers swim once a week with us. Junior SquadsGood swimmers, who show aptitude, enthusiasm, dedication to swimming and commitment MAY be selected to join one of our competitive squads for younger swimmers, from the age of about 7. We have a PRE_JUNIOR and JUNIOR squad who swim at least twice a week. These swimmers work harder, to build stamina but also still receive a great deal of teaching and skill sessions. Very regular attendance is needed if potential is to be built upon. These swimmers may also be asked to swim for the club in Galas, aged 9 and upward. There is greater cost with squad swimming, to reflect the extra water time. Junior Squad swimmers are expected to enter our annual club championships. 6* and BronzeIf, having reached 5* a swimmer does not wish to or is not ready or able to make the necessary commitment to become a squad member, they may move to 6* and then to Bronze group. These swimmers are generally 12 to 16 years of age. They can swim for two, hourly sessions per week. The aim is general keep fit but with swim skill training. From here, swimmers can move to our lifesaving group and gain at least the RLSS Bronze Medallion . They could move back to squad if ability and commitment change. All Star Group swimmers, including 6* and Bronze should take part in our twice yearly Star Galas. They may, of course, enter the Club Championships. LifesavingWe have the lifesaving group as all our poolside main staff need to keep a lifesaving qualification up to date, so we train in-house. We also train younger people (16+) who provide lifesaving cover at our club galas. |
